PostHeaderIcon Proper Weightlifting Form Makes Great Gains

Too often, weight trainers’ lack of muscular development discourages them and they make poor decisions. They either stop going to the gym or harmfully increase the weight they lift. Neither option helps the trainers with their progress. Too many people overlook the fundamentals of weight training, and waste their time and energy. By remembering a few key elements, any person can make positive development, without risking their safety.

The most important fundamental practice in weight training is correct form. Typically, mistakes and accidents happen because someone tries to push or pull too much weight. The first step in proper weight lifting form is finding the right weight. If you are just starting to weight train, be conservative. Use less weight now to make sure you have proper form, and gradually add weight. You won’t transform in one day regardless of how much weight you do, so focus on lifting correctly early on. It’ll pay off soon enough.

Certain key elements apply no matter what exercise you are doing. First, you need to breathe properly. It’s very simple: breathe out as you exert, breathe in upon release. If you’re bench pressing, breathe out as you push up, breathe in as the weight comes back down. It’s a very simple step, but an essential one.

Secondly, whether you are pushing or pulling weight, control the position of your elbows. Most exercises involving your chest, arms, and back require you to keep your elbows in close or square to your body. Keeping your elbows in a single position and close to the body forces your targeted muscle group to do the lifting.

Always bend your knees. If you lock your knees, you don’t have a proper support base. By keeping your knees bent and shoulder-width apart, you’re again letting the proper muscle group do the lifting. This also requires you to strengthen your core. If you curve or bend your back for any reason, you may hurt yourself. Your legs are much stronger than your back, so utilize them. Follow these simple rules and you’ll make gains in no time.

It’s not easy to get healthy. You must break habits and alter attitudes. It’s not impossible, however, and maintaining health is much easier than the path it takes to get healthy. Solely dieting doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll drop pounds. Exercising and continuing to eat junk food won’t do the trick either. It takes a mental overhaul to create a healthy lifestyle. There are so many ways to exercise, but dieting can be much harder. By controlling the consumption of a couple key ingredients, you can put yourself on the right course to healthy living.
Many people think sugar when they think of unhealthy foods. Sugar is a good fuel for your body when it’s controlled. In a society of coffees and energy drinks, people consume more sugar than their bodies can convert into energy. Your body converts excessive sugar into fat, and stores it. The more sugar you consume, you more you have to work to burn it off before your body stores it. These are unnecessary calories, the units of energy your body burns as fuel.
Every type of food contains calories, so not all calories are negative. In order for your body to lose weight, it needs to burn more calories than it absorbs. If you consume a thousand calories but only burn 500 off, the excessive calories store in your body and become fat. Pay attention to the calories and the sugar you eat. They usually go together. Most sugar products are loaded with excessive calories.
Once you pay attention to calories and sugar, you can focus on consumption habits. It is better for your body to eat six smaller meals than three large ones. Eating smaller portions stores the food at a reasonable level, and allows your body to burn up the food by the time you consume again. In this way, your body is never storing, but continuously burning calories. If you stay focused on smaller portions and resist binge eating, you should notice healthier changes to your diet.

PostHeaderIcon The Truth About Steroids

Numerous vials of injectable anabolic steroids...
Image via Wikipedia
Steroids are modernly associated with illegal abuse, self-destructive behavior, and competition. However, steroids have not always had this stigma nor was the aggression always associated with the effects of steroid abuse.Nineteenth century research and experimentation for both scientific and biological interests led scientific professionals to explore the physiological components of the male body. This exploration was driven by the need to know what distinguished a man’s body from that of his female counterpart.
The isolation of male bird testes had them hypothesize that placing testes in other parts of their anatomy would gravely affect the operations of their reproductive systems. So what did this mean in regards to what truly made a man a man? Anabolic functions are those that make simple substances or operations more complex. That being said, scientists suggested that the testosterone in male genetic make-up has many ambitions including physical power and heightened aggression.
So testosterone, when amplified in combination with other hormones, can be a threat to one’s ability to manage their behavior. To further explore these ideas, scientists went on to synthesize testosterone which subsequently became the first steroid. These steroids are essentially a synthetic by-product of the testosterone hormone thereby yielding both healthful and harmful effects. The naturally occurring anabolic functions in both male and female bodies serves our muscles, bones, and protein creation. The issue remains, the manufactured anabolism that is forced upon the body by way of illegal and unmonitored steroid use.
The injection of synthesize steroids often cause our naturally processed levels of testosterone to be submerged in unnatural and extreme amounts of hormones that can lead to an overdose, addiction, or death. In addition to these dramatic consequences of steroid abuse there are clinical studies that prove that impotence, hair loss, and disease are often also related to faulty use of steroids. Even when steroids are initially taken at a minimum in order to enhance workouts or overall physical performances, like most drugs that are taken without a doctor’s permission, users may pave a path for destructive behavior.

Image via Wikipedia

In so many ways, practicing yoga on a regular basis can improve health and well being. Besides the physical benefit of moving and stretching the body, yoga calms the mind, helping us deal with the stresses of everyday life. The ancient practice also fosters spirituality and a strong connection with the universe, and ultimately, ourselves.

Literally translating as “yoke” or “union”, yoga dates back thousands of years and spans many cultures and philosophies, with traditions in Hinduism, Buddism, Jainism, and Islam. Western interpretation focuses primarily on the physical branch, or the asanas (postures), although there are traditionally six to eight ‘limbs’ of yoga that encompass all aspects of life.

The asanas were developed to help prepare the body for meditation, with the goal of calming the body to aid in calming the mind. Western cultures have embraced yoga with open arms in recent years. Students of yoga practice for a multitude of reasons, running the gamut from wanting a good stretch, or good workout, all the way to helping cope with mental stress and other physical conditions.

Incorporating yoga into daily routines enhances overall well being, and can be done by people of all ages. Because there are so many different types of yoga, from rigorous Vinyasa yoga, to mellow Hatha, there are options for every physical capability. While yoga classes can be expensive, many community health centers offer ‘karma’ classes for a small donation, making it more affordable; yoga can also be done at home on a reasonably-priced yoga mat, with a DVD or a number of free classes hosted online.

If you are new to yoga, start slowly, and try as many types of yoga as possible. Some health clubs offer yoga classes, free with membership, and with the recent proliferation of yoga studios in many communities, it isn’t difficult to find a good instructor and class that appeals to you. Supplementing studio classes with at-home practice is an economical way to incorporate yoga into daily routines. Even if you only have fifteen minutes to dedicate to yoga every day, you’ll feel the difference in body and mind.

PostHeaderIcon Maintaining Your Child-Like Innocence

Children laugh, cry, and observe. But far and away the most valuable quality that children possess is their ability to appreciate. Their innocence incepted at birth reigns clear throughout their maturation process. Their excitement is palpable over seemingly mundane objects, festivities, and games. Playing with everything and anything, they see beauty in the colorless, wisdom in the speechless, and calm in the chaos. A witness to everything that life has to offer and yet their comprehension level limited, children can serve as a reminder of ourselves at a point when we saw the world differently.
When we feel overwhelmed and burdened by the life we have created for ourselves as adults, we can often lose sight of the true meaning behind these moral lives of ours; meaning we strive to understand throughout a lifetime and yet acquire insight into as we move forward with each day. When questioned about how some people in the elderly population have been able to survive as long as they have, a common answer is, "I didn’t let myself get old."
Beyond the scope of disease, accidents, and depression, the will to survive the mounting stress and feat that often drives the adult population to give up on the beauty in life in many arenas in their lives, exists the power to maintain a child-like innocence without deceptively convincing oneself they are invincible. There are real threats in our world, small and large, and yet the ability to tap into our sophisticated naivety can be paramount in managing the ups and downs we experience.
Taking the time to view a situation, person, or experience through the lens of a child can lead to an astute understanding of what we can glean from this life. When money problems arise, relationship issues take over, or you fall victim to other’s callousness, you may just want to take the time to blow up a balloon, swing on the swings, or talk to a child for their advice, as often the most infantile components of our worlds can provide the most sound insight if you are open to it.

PostHeaderIcon Are E-Cigarettes Really Safer?

Image via Wikipedia
Smoking is a leading cause of disease, but many smokers find it very hard to quit. Some of them just don’t want to stop smoking, but others have tried and failed so many times that they just aren’t sure they can try again. For smokers who want to quit, and for those who want to cut down on how much they’re spending on cigarettes, there’s the electronic cigarette. E-cigarettes have gained a lot of popularity recently because they can be used even in areas where there are ‘no smoking’ signs. They don’t actually put off any smoke at all, only water vapor. That lowers the risk to people around them, but are they really safe? It would seem as though they’re safer than standard cigarettes, because the only thing the smoker is inhaling is nicotine.
The tar and other chemicals, along with all the carcinogens, are eliminated with an e-cigarette. There is an argument, of course, that inhaling nicotine vapor itself isn’t good for you – and that makes sense. Given the choice between inhaling only nicotine and inhaling nicotine along with all the other chemicals in a cigarette, the straight nicotine would appear to be the least dangerous. The best choice, of course, is to simply quit smoking, but that’s not quite as easy as it sounds. Cigarette smoking has been called more addictive than heroin, and some people simply can’t make themselves quit, no matter how hard they try. They see that it’s ruining their health, but yet they continue to smoke.
The patches and gums that are offered to smokers haven’t met with a great deal of success for most people. The prescription options can have nasty side effects, and some people just simply aren’t willing to use them. For people who’re running out of options, the e-cigarette can be a good alternative. It can help people move toward quitting their cigarette habit for good, or at least cut down on the amount of dangerous chemicals that they’re inhaling. Both of these options are better than simply continuing to smoke standard cigarettes.

PostHeaderIcon Are Alternative Health Treatments Effective?

Blackcurrant

Eastern medicine has become more popular lately, but does it really work? That depends on what it’s being used for and what specific treatments are offered. It can also depend on the beliefs of the person being treated. Some people say that they get no benefit at all from these alternative treatments, where others say that they have been healed or cured by them. Most people who try them fall somewhere in the middle with their opinions. They get some help or relief, but they aren’t cured and their condition or problem doesn’t completely go away. The good news for people who want to continue these kinds of treatments is that more and more of them are being covered by insurance. Yet another great news is that your loved pet’s health is also covered by pet insurance plan! Depending on type of pet you are rearing, you can chose a insurance policy offered by different companies. The most prominent one being VPI Pet Insurance, which pioneered pet insurance in USA during 1982.

Chiropractic, which was once considered quackery, is now covered by a lot of insurance plans. Some of them also cover acupuncture, hypnotherapy, and related options. There is still no coverage for herbalists and energy healers, but it’s suspected that these will one day be covered treatments, too. More people are demanding these kinds of treatments, and they’re finding that, in many cases, they work just as well as the Western medical options – often without the side effects that prescription drugs might give them. Of course, not everyone would agree as to the value of these kinds of treatments. This is largely why they aren’t yet covered by insurance. When more studies have been done on them, there will be more coverage if they’re found to be helpful for a large group of people.

For now, people who believe in the quality of these treatments are paying for them out-of-pocket. That makes them unaffordable for some of the people who really need them. However, most of these treatments aren’t as expensive as Western medical options. This lower cost is another reason that people are turning to them when they need help. They may not be able to afford to see a standard doctor, but they can afford the alternative treatments that are offered in their area. If you decide to try these treatments, be sure you see someone reputable.

PostHeaderIcon Good Mental Health is a Serious Matter

Institute of Mental Health 5, Nov 06
Image via Wikipedia
Physical exercise is always talked about by doctors and others in the medical field. It’s clear that it’s important, but mental health also matters. It doesn’t get talked about as much, though, and that’s unfortunate. It’s too easy for people to overlook the fact that they should take care of their mental health so that they’re able to stay sharp well into their golden years. It’s not just about staying sharp, either. It’s also about staying happy. Stress can make you feel rundown and sad. It’s hard on your mind, and also takes a toll on your body. It’s best to keep it out of your life, but if you can’t avoid it there are ways to make it less of a problem. By doing that, you’ll be better able to keep your mind functioning well.
If you feel as though you’re having problems with your mental health, seeing someone can help you. Whether you see your family doctor to be tested for an actual medical problem, or whether you see a counselor to talk things out and look for some perspective in life, you should do something to help  yourself. Both physical and psychological causes can be present with mental health issues, so it’s important to sort out what’s causing you to feel poorly. Once you figure out the cause, you can start treating it so you can improve more quickly.
Some people with mental health issues wait a very long time before they seek treatment. By then, the behaviors and patterns that they’re experiencing have become so ingrained that they have a very difficult time breaking them, even with help. Don’t wait until you get to that point. The sooner you get assistance with your problem, the easier it will be to correct and the sooner you’ll start feeling better. You can get back to your old self again, but it may take some work. It’ll be worth it to feel good and get back into life the way you used to and the way you want to for your future.

PostHeaderIcon Stress: How to Lower It in Your Life

Day 18- Stress!
Everyone deals with stress sometimes. There are situations that come up at work and at home where stress is impossible to avoid. Some people react much more strongly to that stress than others do. For example, some people have anxiety problems and panic attacks, which increase when they are placed under physical and/or mental stress. Other people shrug and laugh and just let things roll right off of them. Most people are in the middle of the spectrum. They get stressed out, but then they get over it without panicking or developing anxiety problems. Even for these people, the long-term effects of stress on their body can be harmful.
Since you can’t completely eliminate the stress in your life, it’s important that you learn ways to lower it and get through it faster so you can let it go. One of the best ways to do that is through deep breathing. Most people don’t breathe the right way, but they don’t realize it. No one ever taught them to breathe properly, so they struggle with stress and anxiety that they wouldn’t have if they were breathing correctly. Breathing should come from the diaphragm, not the top of the lungs. If your chest is rising and falling as you breathe, that’s too shallow. Your belly should actually be the area to rise and fall. That gets the air deeper into your lungs and helps you to feel more relaxed.
By breathing the right way – slowly and deeply from the diaphragm – it’s nearly impossible to panic or experience any kind of severe anxiety. It can help an anxiety attack go away, or prevent one from happening. It can also help a person feel less stressed out over big things and small things in life. Keeping control of your stress levels will be easier if you remember to breathe. It takes some practice, but once you’ve gotten into the habit you’ll automatically breathe the right way. Give it a try, and see how it quickly and efficiently lowers your level of stress, no matter what the situation.

PostHeaderIcon Finding the Most Reliable Health Information

Dr. Schreiber of San Augustine giving a typhoi...
Image via Wikipedia
Have you ever read a study that says one thing, and a few weeks or months later you see one that says exactly the opposite? Everyone has probably had that happen to them at least once. It seems like there’s so much conflicting information out there that people just can’t decide what’s true anymore. With health information, that can be an especially serious problem. If you aren’t paying attention to your health you could end up very sick, but how do you really know that you’re doing the right thing? First of all, don’t believe everything you read. In order to be sure of what you’re reading, you have to know the background behind it. Without that, the information is mostly meaningless when trying to determine if it applies to your specific situation.
Your doctor is the one to ask. It’s true that your doctor doesn’t know everything. It’s not possible for a doctor to keep up with all that’s taking place in the world of medicine. However, your doctor will have more general knowledge about a specific condition than most other people – and he might be willing to look over that study you found if you ask him to. That way, you’ll get a professional opinion instead of an article written by someone without a medical degree. It’s also a good idea to stay away from comments and forum posts on medical subjects. You can never really be sure who the person posting actually is and what his situation is like. Your experiences and medical condition might be very different.
If you’re going to get your information from the Internet, choose sites that belong to teaching hospitals and other reputable places. Don’t choose something that doesn’t have any affiliation with a hospital or that’s not a recognized resource. If you do that, you could end up with information that’s completely wrong. Why risk your health over one person’s opinion? Make sure you’re getting reliable health information from a trusted source, so you can continue to make informed health decisions and do what’s right for your specific needs.
